Creative Photographer in Rome: La Dolce Vita photo shooting

This interview was conducted by me and Evita Jurkone, founder of Dolc’ Evita Photography.
Evita currently is a Wine Export Manager and years ago she had another big passion and a business idea: to become a Creative Photographer in Rome.
I supported her amazing plan with my business development consultancy, word of mouth and some marketing advice.
Our goal was to give “life” to a unique and recognisable photography and photo shooting service in Rome.
To improve her new business activity in Rome, I used word of mouth, direct marketing actions, partnerships with hotels and tourist facilities, membership, event.
What’s Dolc`Evita photography in few words?
The idea of Dolc`Evita Photography was born in Rome; inspired by La Dolce Vita – an Italian phrase that literally translates as “the sweet life,” popularised by Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960) movie and first used in English in the 1960s.
The time of Fellini Movies is saved in history as a time of life full of beauty, pleasures, and mundane events. Movies mirrored the time of great economic growth, the end of the 1950s and the early 1960s, when Italy literally experienced its blooming miracle. Later, La Dolce Vita expression entered the vocabulary of the whole world.
Dolc`Evita Photography was created by me, Evita Jurkone, uniting my name Evita with the phrase Dolce Vita and is inspired by all of the associations of Fellini, Cinema, Theatre and Italian lifestyle and fashion in general in 50s and 60s
I offer different type of photography services including portraits, couples, travels, events, corporate and fashion.
What’s the main difference between you and other photographers in Rome?
There are many good Italian and foreign photographers in Rome, of course, but I have my own personal style of being a creative photographer in Rome. The way I see my subject is unique and impossible to be copied. It is sensual, delicate, beautifying, emotional, vibrant. It is always self- mirroring… I do believe it’s different and gives me my niche to be recognisable and irreplaceable in my own way.
Each photo ideally resembles the image of the style of La Dolce Vita.
It starts from the location, artistic and cinematographic approach of setting.
Then make up, lights, scene, the idea of story of photo-shooting: every aspect inspires and supports my work and the outcome of results. It’s like beautiful bohemian meditation around the idea of inspiration.
And it’s never a simple photo shooting in Rome (or elsewhere), my photo shooting should work as a self-healing process for my client; for finding comfort, beauty, love within her (him) – self. This probably is the reason why especially women are so interested in doing photo shoots with me.
It’s true, I see from your portfolio that most of your clients are women, why?
Working with women is evolving and interesting. As well more challenging. It is like a peeling an onion, every client of mine.Within the process of interviewing and shooting there are so many layers in females psyche and you never know what’s coming the next. My goal is to find in each and every of them that little princess and same time powerful woman, to embrace their own connection with their inner playful child and mysterious femme fatale. You know women are born actresses, but they do not always acknowledge it but use these skills instinctively most of the times, with a little boost in self-confidence they reconnect to their inner queen and shine again brighter.
For me it’s very beautiful process, seeing it from outside and being a part of it inside.
It CREATES and HEALS.
The subjects of my photos or my clients can be a models or actresses who need a new professional photo book, but they are also normal* women, and that’s my favourite thing, women think they are ordinary, who simply don’t know they have so much beauty and charisma inside. I help them to rediscover it, to reimagine it, to bring it out and show it at its brilliance. My passion is my client seeing themselves in a new way, in a way they never thought possible.
Are your customers very often foreigners?
Yes, they are. However lately there are more and more Italians too.
Italy is a new country for me even though I have been living here for several years, my network is very international, which has favoured me with international clients. I’m working as well with hotels in Rome that would offer photographic services to their clients in honor of La Dolce Vita lifestyle; I often do photoshoots for couples or friends immersed in the beauty of ancient Rome.
Right now most of my clients come from word-of-mouth referrals and recommendations.
How it actually is to have business in Italy as a foreigner?
In reality it is very difficult, it’s a difficult country for developing businesses both for foreigners and locals too. The real challenge is the phenomenon of Italy – the image of beautiful Italian La Dolce Vita lifestyle and the real struggle to make it happen here. The system doesn’t function in the same ways as in other countries in Europe.
But Undoubtedly Italy is an exceptional country for the tourism, fashion and beauty industries and therefore also for photography, but it has its challenges.
Becoming a creative photographer in Rome was a real challenge, furthemore a foreigner!
I choose to see this as an opportunity. Relationships and connections are the most important things in Italy, it is in base of any success in Italy.
As well being a foreigner and establishing business here essential is to hire a knowledgeable seasoned local consultant who can help you develop business opportunities and walk you through the complex entrepreneurial system.
